Date: August 18, 2011 — 2:30PM Location: Tom Davies Square, 200 Brady Street

SUDBURY, ON — Greater Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk will join the Sudbury Design Society in presenting the first annual SDS Good Design Award. The Good Design Award honours annual achievements and/or commitment to the practice of professional graphic design, with emphasis on quality design of the highest form, function, and aesthetic—a standard beyond ordinary or typical.
The award will be presented to two local entrepreneurs, Papillon Press and River and Sky Music/Camping Festival.

PAPILLON PRESS

Papillon Press is the only printer in Greater Sudbury specializing in the fine art of letterpress. Owned and operated
by Chantal Bennett and Joel Kimmel, illustrators who graduated from Parsons The New School for Design and Sheriden College respectively, Papillon has been an important player in the new wave of Sudbury design. On top of their letterpress work, Bennett and Kimmel contribute their expertise as part-time professors at Cambrian College.

“At Papillon Press we consider ourselves artists, not just printers. We strive to give you something different. We want you to have a letterpress product that separates you from the crowd. When you buy Papillon Press stationery, not only do you get a wonderfully tactile letterpress product, you also know that artistry and craftsmanship were the number one focus in the making of your order.” — www.papillonletterpress.com

RIVER AND SKY MUSIC/CAMPING FESTIVAL

River and Sky is a community driven, ‘made in Sudbury’ project. Supported by our local music and arts communities, this festival is a unique opportunity to experience the best Sudbury culture has to offer. With so many local designers involved in the festival over its 3 year history, River and Sky has been invaluable in raising awareness of Sudbury design.

“There is something special about River and Sky, and it is not just the great music, the great times, or the free spirit, funky festival vibe. It is about that intangible thing, true community, that people pine for, and that can sometimes seem in short supply. River and Sky is a music festival, but it is also community. It connects like-minded people to each other and to nature, through music, and through common activity and vision.” — Naomi Grant
