Cambrian College Donor Awards

Category: Packaging & 3D
Entered By: Katarina Perkovic
Date: 2020.08.13

Description: This set of six awards was created to thank donors and recognize their support of Cambrian College. The Cambrian College Foundation wanted six separate recognition pieces created that could work both as solo pieces and be unified as part of a greater collection that grows throughout the donor’s giving journey.

Inspired by Northern Ontario wildlife, six animals were chosen to symbolize characteristics inherent to the spirit of Cambrian College. Each of the animals represent a different set of characteristics and are assigned to the various recognition levels: Benefactors, Trailblazers, Visionaries, President’s Circle, Governor’s Circle, and Legacy Circle. The illustrated portion of the awards, as well as the award title and college logo, are designed to be laser burned onto a light wood and appear behind clear glass, adding an elegant touch alongside the natural wood.

The college felt strongly that students should be involved in the design and manufacturing of the awards and I was commissioned to design them while studying graphic design at the college. The awards were also to be manufactured in part by Cambrian College students. With this in mind, the design had to be simple enough to allow students to be involved in the manufacturing process while keeping within budgetary constraints. The awards were designed to last over the years and be able to fit into a variety of locations (e.g. living room, office, business lobby etc.). Donors are also given the option to place their recognition piece either on a surface or hung up on a wall with an added mounting piece.

The illustrations are extremely cohesive and create a strong impression through contrast against the light wood. Paired with a modern, clean typography system on the front and back, the award exhibits a timeless quality that allows for easy and pleasant display. The engineering of the plaques is also of note: made of wood and glass, the award is well con- structed and if it were to be thrown away, the materials will biodegrade naturally or be inert in a landfill or the environ- ment. These minimalist awards are cohesive and were designed with a strong eye to detail in the illustration style.
